Sweden is the first western country establishing diplomatic relationship with China. Though long distance lies between China and Sweden, one is in Asian Continent and the other in the north part of Europe, economic and trade ties between the two countries has a long history dating back to hundreds of year ago. It was when the first merchant ship of Swedish East Indian Company started to bound for Guangzhou of China on 9 February 1732 that opened the first page of the historical volume of the bilateral trade relations. In 1892, Ericsson AB exported its first shipment of telephone sets to China.
The annual bilateral trade value for the year 2006 reached USD6.7 billion. China has become Sweden’s biggest trade partner in Asia. And Sweden is an important trade and investment partner of China among EU countries. The bilateral investment has maintained good momentum in recent years. Many Swedish companies including well-known Swedish multinational companies and small and medium sized companies have established their businesses in China and have gained significant economic benefits.
Meanwhile, along with the implementation of “Going Abroad” strategy, more and more Chinese companies are setting up their presence abroad. More and more Chinese companies have shown the interests of establishing business relation with Sweden. The economic and trade cooperation between China and Sweden has made great achievements.
Looking into the future, Sino-Sweden economic and trade cooperation has big potential for further and prosperous development due to strong economic complements.
